Kiwi's Kick Ass Cancer Walk - 18th September 2016
In 2012 a very close friend of ours recieved some life changing news. While at work he started to feel unwell and collapsed. After some days in hospital and some tests he got the diagnosis - CML (Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia) - the C - word.
Many people are afraid of getting cancer, but after being diagnosed, Kiwi actually found a new lease of life (not that he wasn't the bubbliest guy around before!). He wasn't going to sulk about it, he wasn't going to let it defeat him. Kiwi was going to show cancer who is boss!
Having gone through some very tough times over the last few years, he has fought back and now has a relatively normal life. He will have to be on medication for the rest of his life but other than that he is out there doing what he loves every day.
Kiwi is a keen scout (that is where we met about 25 years ago!) and has given so much time and effort to the scouts. From being a helper, to a leader at Explorer scouts, and even serving a few seasons as a "Pinkie" at Kandersteg, the World Scout Centre in Switzerland.
To give something back to all the people that helped him in his fight against cancer, Kiwi decided to hold an annual fundraising event. He wanted it to be something fairly relaxed so that all the family can come along, but challenging to those who wanted to push themselves. Kiwi's Kick Ass Cancer Walk was born.
Garbed in pink t-shirts, over 80 people ranging from under 2 year olds to over 60 year olds (even a few pet dogs came out for the day!) took part in a 10k walk at Osterley Park. 3 laps around the park (1 or 2 for those less able) followed by a scrumptious BBQ put on by the Ailsa Tavern in Twickenham, Kiwi was able to raise over £2500 for The Blood Fund and Macmillan Cancer Support.
We at Rubix are so proud to help in such a great cause and would like to congratulate Kiwi on his healthy progress as well as being able to raise such a huge amount for two amazing charities. Well done Kiwi!
